How to Apply

1. What are the selection criteria for the Bitterne Park School Direct route?

  • For secondary, you must have a first or second class UK University degree (2:2 or above)
  • For primary, ideally you should have a first or upper second (2:1), although exceptional candidates with a lower second (2:2) may be considered
  • To train as a teacher on any secondary programme, you must have a grade C in GCSE English and Mathematics
  • To train as a teacher on any primary programme, you must have a grade C in GCSE English, Mathematics and Science
  • You will have demonstrated some experience of working with secondary or primary aged students
  • You will have a commitment to comprehensive education and to working with students from a range of social and cultural backgrounds
  • Before commencing the programme, you will need to pass Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy, and obtain a DBS Enhanced Disclosure Certificate

4. Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses at the University of Southampton

If you are applying for our secondary teacher training programme and your degree subject is not close enough to the subject you want to teach, you can take additional training before you start your initial teacher training (ITT). Pre-initial teacher training enhancement courses are intensive programmes for graduates who need to develop a greater depth of subject understanding prior to training for qualified teacher status. Enhancement courses are suitable for graduates with experience of the subject to at least A-level standard. Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses are available at the University of Southampton in the following subjects:
