Consultation On Proposals To Expand

Bitterne Park (Community Secondary) School Expansion Consultation

Why do we need to expand Secondary Schools?

Southampton, along with many other Local Authorities has seen a sharp increase in pupils entering Year R in recent years. The Council responded by expanding schools in the primary sector to ensure that there were sufficient places for this demand.

However, as these pupils advance toward secondary education our current surplus of places in the secondary sector will be eroded and surpassed. Our goal is that all children and young people should be able to learn and develop in provision that has been judged ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.

Southampton will exceed its overall Secondary places (in all year groups) around 2022-23, but is projected to exceed its Year 7 capacity sooner; in 2017-18 or 2018-19.

There are currently 2,290 places available in Southampton for Year 7 pupils. The Local Authority has begun the process of planning additional capacity within the City for the projected increase in pupil numbers.

Schools in the East of the City will see a more gradual increase in demand, however Bitterne Park School is currently oversubscribed and will need to expand to take account of parental choice.
