We would like to remind all parents to ensure their children are safe online and the importance of monitoring your child’s mobile phone. Students have recently reported concerns around inappropriate ‘Instagram’ accounts encouraging users to send illicit images of themselves and others. We have reported this to the Police and Instagram and the account has since been shut down.
Please see the message below from the LA & Police
We are aware there is a profile on Instagram becoming popular amongst pupils in schools in Southampton and the New Forest that contains indecent images of young people.
The majority of the images appear to be selfies that have been shared previously and unfortunately have ended up on this account.
In the first instance, we would like to urge anyone aware of this profile, or similar profiles, to report it to Instagram to allow it to be promptly shut down.
Instagram have a broad policy which prohibits the posting of sexually explicit content which includes images which the user does not have permission to distribute.
We are carrying out enquiries in relation to those pictured. If you believe one of the images is of you, or your child, please call 101 and report it. We want to protect young people from putting themselves at risk of being bullied, shamed and harassed online.
We would like to be clear that anyone found to be following, sharing or tagging images on this account will be dealt with robustly. Engaging with this profile online constitutes ‘making and distributing indecent images of children’ which is a very serious offence. You will be arrested and may get a criminal record.
We would like to remind parents to ensure their children are safe online and the dangers around sharing sexual images.
Please monitor your child’s access to social media accounts as best you can and visit https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/ for more information about how to keep young people safe online or download an app to monitor the images your child is taking https://www.selfiecop.com/
