In PSHE and Citizenship our overall aims are to develop successful learners, who are confident individuals and responsible citizens.

The purpose of Citizenship education within Bitterne Park School is to enable pupils to have a clear understanding of their roles, rights and responsibilities in relation to their local, national and international communities. 

Pupils have the option to take GCSE Citizenship as part of their GCSE options.

The main aims of Personal, Health, Social and Economic education or PSHE for pupils to develop understanding about the following,

 

PSHE, Extended Tutor Times, RCS assemblies and cross-curricular experiences will enable pupils to:

 

 

  • Respect themselves as individuals; whilst developing an understanding, tolerance and respect for others and their differences, treating all people as equal
  • Develop a clear set of values and attitudes and establish a strong moral code
  • Value themselves as unique human beings capable of spiritual, moral, intellectual and physical growth and development
  • Develop their abilities and talents fully, setting achievable goals and using their talents to help others in the community
  • Learn to enjoy a healthy lifestyle
  • Develop family relationships and value family as a foundation of society
  • Understand the principles of society and democracy
  • Respect the rule of law and encourage others to do so
  • Develop an understanding of the beliefs and practices of major world religions and cultures
  • Respect the diversity of the environment and take responsibility for its maintenance for future generations

The programme will aid pupils to develop skills of:

  • Enquiry and communication: by analysing sources of information, expressing opinions, defending opinions and participating in discussion and debate
  • Participation and responsible action: by thinking about and demonstrating empathy for others’ opinions and experiences, critically evaluating others’ views and taking part in activities within the school community

Who is involved in PSHE/Citizenship?

  • Planning for Citizenship will be coordinated by the head of PSHE, Careers, Healthy Schools and Connexions Coordinators.
  • Pupils have opportunities to contribute to the work of the School Council.
  • Year teams and subject leaders will provide opportunities for participation and where appropriate, encourage responsible action.
  • All subjects will make explicit links with Citizenship in their schemes of work and lessons.  They will provide progress file evidence.
  • Planned units of work for Citizenship are incorporated into the extended tutor time programme.
  • Parents and carers are asked to encourage participation in planned community activities and clubs for young people.

    Tutors are responsible for the delivery of PSHE and Citizenship through Extended Tutor Times. Everybody within school, working in partnership with outside agencies, has a valuable part to play in achieving these aims.
