BTEC FIRST DIPLOMA IN SPORT
(Equivalent to 4 GCSE’s)
This is an exciting opportunity to select a new course for Bitterne Park School. BTec Firsts are designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications. They have been developed to provide preparation for employment in this sector and/or provide career development opportunities for pupils.
Course Content
Over two years pupils will study 6 units. Each unit is assessed through a piece of coursework that focuses on particular aspects of sport.
Unit 1
The Sports Industry
This unit defines sports as well as aspects of participation, excellence and the concept of sports development. Role of mass media, professionalism and global funding issues.
Unit 2
Health and Safety and Injury
In this unit causes and prevention of injury as well as basic procedures for treatment are studied. Relevant laws and regulations that deal with Health & Safety will also be addressed.
Unit 3
Preparation for Sport
Here we investigate fitness levels and lifestyles of individuals. A range of fitness tests are administered. Fitness training and nutritional requirements of sports performers are investigated.
Unit 4
Sport Leadership Skills
Students are taught the skills, technique and knowledge when coaching. Opportunities are given to lead and assist with practical activities.
Unit 5
The Sports Performer/Practical Sport
Her investigations into a wide range of factors that contribute to successful sports performance. These include skills, tactics, fitness, diet, psychology and other.
Unit 6
Work Based Project
Students will be given an opportunity to spend a minimum of 10 days in a sport related environment.
How do I pass?
To achieve a pass students have to pass each unit. Assessments will be made throughout the course. There is no final exam. Attitude and attendance are critical. Students can achieve the whole range of GCSE marks.
Pass represents 4 Grade C’s
Merit represents 4 Grade B’s
Distinction represents 4 Grade A’s
